Families Helping Families of Acadiana

... is a non-profit, family directed resource center for individuals with disabilities and their families. It is a place families can go for information, services and support that is totally directed and staffed by parents or family members of individuals with disabilities.  

Families Helping Families was founded after the LA Legislature passed Act 378 of 1989 which included guiding principles for a Community and Family Support System.  The Louisiana Developmental Disabilities Council (also known as the DD Council) established the network of Families Helping Families Resource Centers as a pilot program.  Since the establishment of  the centers, their programs, goals and mission, have been supported by the DD Council, along with the LA Department of Education, The Office of Public Health, The Office for Citizens with Developmental Disabilities and the Office of Mental Health.

We also house a lending library of books, VHS tapes and DVDs on topics such as: special education laws and disability-specific or general information pertaining to autism, ADHD, bi-polar disorder, Down Syndrome, sibling issues, self-help skills, communication, etc.
